The Spinal Cord Injury and Disorders (SCI&D) Service Line is one of the 5 core clinical Service Lines in VISN 1. This is accomplished through:

  • Patient and/or family education;
  • Psychological, social, and vocational care;
  • Research;
  • Education; and
  • Professional training in the continuum of care for persons with SCI&D.

The SCI&D system of care provides coordinated services for eligible veterans with spinal cord injury. These services include, but are not limited to:

  • emergency care
  • medical and/or surgical stabilization
  • rehabilitation
  • primary care
  • preventive care
  • specialty sustaining care
  • surgical care
  • outpatient care
  • home care, and
  • long-term care.

The SCI&D Service Line offers an integrated network of care based on a “hub and spoke” model. The hub is the SCI Center at VA Boston Healthcare System. The spoke sites include SCI Support Clinics at VA Connecticut, Togus VA, and White River Junction VA. SCI Primary Teams are located at Bedford, Manchester, Northampton, and Providence VA.
