VA New England Healthcare System (VISN 1) has been honored with the 2013 Platinum Performance Excellence Award from Partners in Performance Excellence© (PiPEx).

VISN 1 received the award during PiPEx's 2013 Baldrige Best Practices Summit at the Westin, in Waltham, MA on November 4. PiPEx, a Baldrige Enterprise Member serving Massachusetts and New York, supports organizations through its commitment to, and focus on, long-term sustainability and overall organizational performance excellence using the proven, world-class framework of the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence. The Criteria provide an integrated systems approach to organizational change, innovation, and sustainability.

"Our mission is to honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being," said Michael F. Mayo-Smith, MD, MPH, VISN 1 Network Director. "In support of this mission, we have a commitment to excellence that is supported by a strong culture of improvement. We are honored to receive this award, as it showcases our hard work and commitment to performance excellence."

As part of a national alliance, Partners in Performance Excellence seeks to enhance the competitiveness of job-producing organizations and grow the economy. The Baldrige Criteria are named for Malcolm Baldrige, a former U.S. Secretary of Commerce, and were created by an Act of Congress in 1987. The Criteria have been continuously monitored and improved over the years to where they now help leaders improve their quality, organizational development, and systems thinking. VISN 1 conducts annual Baldrige-based organizational assessments to evaluate and accelerate progress toward its goals.

Established in 1995, VISN 1 is one of 21 VISNs within the Veterans Health Administration. Comprising eight Joint Commission-accredited medical centers and over 46 community-based outpatient clinics and outreach clinics, VA New England is a comprehensive, integrated health care delivery system providing health care services to more than 252,000 patients in the six New England states.
