Medical specialty services available in VISN 1 vary by the complexity of the facility.   VISN 1 provides medical specialties services that include general medicine, inpatient hospitalist services, emergency medicine, medical intensive care and coronary intensive care, hematology, oncology, cardiology, pulmonology, neurology, nephrology and dialysis, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, rheumatology and others.

The medical specialties service line develops policies, programs and standard processes related to the service line activities across the VISN and identifies and spreads best practices. These efforts improve quality, safety, access, patient satisfaction, and cost-effectiveness, as well as workforce development.
